Here’s how it works in Connecticut and the New Haven Metro. First, you apply for a duplicate title through the DMV (online, by mail, or at a DMV or DMV Express location). It’s usually a small fee and takes about 1–4 weeks. While that’s processing, we’ll help you think through tow-truck access to your car—whether it’s in Fair Haven, Westville, East Rock, Newhallville, the Hill, West Haven, Hamden, or any surrounding town. Once your new title arrives, you sign it, we schedule your free pickup, and the proceeds from your donated vehicle benefit Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) supporting people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm your car’s location and tow access in New Haven Metro
Before anything else, think about where the car actually sits—driveway in Westville, street in Fair Haven, lot in West Haven, or garage in Hamden. As long as a flatbed can safely get in and load it, missing keys are not a deal-breaker. When you contact Elm City Autos, describe parking, tight turns, low garages, and any obstacles so we can plan the right truck.
2. Apply for a duplicate title with the DMV (the critical step)
In most cases, Connecticut law requires a title before donation. Apply for a duplicate through the DMV or your state’s DMV if it’s titled elsewhere. Expect a modest fee and roughly 1–4 weeks processing. Start this step right away—everything else depends on it. We can point you to the correct DMV link or office based on where the vehicle is currently titled.
3. Keep basic info handy while the DMV processes your title
While you wait for the duplicate title, gather your vehicle details: VIN (if you have an old registration or insurance card), approximate mileage, and general condition. We can open your donation file with Elm City Autos during this time, so that once your title arrives, all we need is the final paperwork and a pickup date for your keyless car.
4. Tell us clearly that the car has no keys when scheduling
When you’re ready to schedule pickup, clearly say the vehicle has no keys or can’t start. Our towing partner will send a flatbed or wheel-lift setup that can load a non-running, locked, or keyless car. As long as the vehicle is safely reachable in places like East Rock, Downtown, or the Hill, the driver can winch it onto the truck at no cost to you.
5. Sign over the duplicate title and complete pickup for free
Once your duplicate title is in hand, you’ll sign it over to complete the donation. The tow driver will guide you on where to sign if needed. Pickup is always free across New Haven Metro and nationwide. After the vehicle is sold, Elm City Autos sends you a tax receipt; for $500 or more, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C with your federal return.
6. Receive your tax receipt and help Heritage for the Blind
After your keyless, formerly no-title vehicle is processed, you receive your donation acknowledgment and tax receipt by mail. Proceeds support Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) providing services to people who are blind or visually impaired. You clear a problem car out of your life, help a meaningful cause, and still get every dollar of the tax benefit you’re entitled to.
Potential complications to watch for
The car is in someone else’s name or an estate
Tip: If the title wasn’t in your name, the DMV may require extra forms—power of attorney, proof of inheritance, or paperwork from probate. Start the duplicate title process early and explain the situation to the DMV. Once they issue a title in the correct legal owner’s name, you can donate without issues.
The vehicle is blocked in or not safely reachable by a flatbed
Tip: A car wedged behind other vehicles, up a narrow backyard path, or deep in a tight garage can slow things down. Before scheduling, clear a path and confirm access for a full-size tow truck.
